It'south Kind of a Funny Story is a 2010 American one-act-drama film written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, an adaptation of Ned Vizzini's 2006 novel of the same proper noun. The pic stars Keir Gilchrist, Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts, and Viola Davis.[3] It was released in the The states on Oct 8, 2010, and received more often than not positive reviews.

Plot [edit]

Contemplating suicide, 16-yr-old Craig Gilner seeks help at a infirmary. He tells a md named Dr. Mahmoud that he needs immediate help, so he is registered for a five day stay at the developed ward on the infirmary'south psychiatric flooring.

Craig feels a lot of pressure from his high school, Executive Pre-Professional, and is stressed over needing to plough in an application for a prestigious summertime school. As well he feels he has shortcomings in the shadow of his best friend Aaron, who is neat at everything, and his dad, who pressures him to do well. At first, Craig is uncertain if he made the correct choice to stay, fearing his friends may find out where he is, especially Nia, his shell and Aaron's girlfriend.

Craig is introduced to Bobby, an adult patient who takes Craig nether his wing. During a group word, Craig learns that Bobby is stressed near an upcoming interview, hoping to move to a grouping dwelling. Bobby worries that the sweater he is wearing is all he has to habiliment for the interview, so Craig offers him i of his dad's dress shirts to wear. Noelle, another teenage patient who is in for cocky-harm, is impressed past Craig's kindness, so leaves him a note to meet with her afterward on. They attend a painting session for patients together, where Craig paints a motion-picture show of an imaginary metropolis map which he describes as "like my own brain".

Throughout his stay, Craig bonds with diverse patients, including Bobby and Noelle. Bobby tells him he is a begetter of a lilliputian daughter, and is in the ward for attempting to kill himself six times. Equally Craig tries to help Bobby with his problems, Bobby, in turn, helps Craig proceeds the courage to ask out Noelle.

One night, Nia stops by to visit Craig, revealing that she and Aaron take cleaved upward. Craig invites Nia to his room, where she tries to seduce him. However, they are interrupted by Craig's roommate Muqtada, an older patient who has not left the room during his stay. Every bit Nia runs out, Craig chases her, declaring he loves her, unaware that Noelle is standing backside him. Upset, she storms off, leaving behind a cocky-portrait she had planned to give him.

After Craig is discharged, he narrates a montage showing he has started dating Noelle, become better friends with Aaron and Nia, and begun pursuing his goal to go an artist. He has broken the news to his dad that he is not going to follow his path, which his dad understands. Craig affirms that, while his stay didn't cure his condition, it helped him a lot, and he can get through the balance of his life with the help of his family and friends.

Production [edit]

In May 2006, Paramount Pictures and MTV Films acquired the film rights to the novel. Anna Boden and Ryan Bit were hired to adapt the screenplay.[four] [five] The film was later placed in turnaround and bought past Focus Features.[1]

Product began in New York Urban center on November xxx, 2009.[3] Chief photography took about 6 weeks, catastrophe on Feb 2, 2010.[6] Scenes taking identify in the fictional Executive Pre-Professional High Schoolhouse were shot at Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn,[7] while Woodhull Medical Centre in Brooklyn stood in for Argenon Hospital.[six]

Disquisitional response [edit]

As of January 2020[update], the picture show holds a 57% blessing rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 136 reviews with an average rating of 6.00/ten. The critics consensus states "It's amiable, and information technology does a surprisingly good task of sidestepping psych ward comedy clichés, just given its talented cast and directors, It'southward Kind of a Funny Story should be more than just mildly entertaining."[xv] On Metacritic, the film has an boilerplate score of 63, based on 33 reviews, which indicates "Generally favorable reviews".[16]

Justin Chang of Multifariousness wrote: "The filmmakers fully retain their offbeat sensibility and attentiveness to graphic symbol while providing perhaps the sharpest showcase yet for Zach Galifianakis' outsized talents."[17] Peter Travers of Rolling Stone wrote: "I don't arraign you lot for backing off a movie that focuses on a suicidal teen who learns warm life lessons by spending 5 days in a Brooklyn hospital's psych ward. End worrying. It'south Kind of a Funny Story, based on Ned Vizzini's semiautobiographical novel, breaks the jinx."[18]

Michael Rechtshaffen of The Hollywood Reporter called it "A dramatically inert, lethargic dramedy that isn't nearly equally quirky and poignant as information technology perceives itself."[19] Ann Hornaday of The Washington Mail service gave the film a negative review, saying "At that place'southward very little that'south even kind of funny in It'due south Kind of a Funny Story, which can't accurately exist described as a one-act merely isn't a true drama, either."[20]
